Vienna - Billy Joe

For me “Vienna” has certain timelessness. It was released in the ’70s, but sounds like it could have come out yesterday. It talks about the questions that never really go away: what we want and what we need. What about getting older? How do we live our lives?

You got your passion, you got your pride
But don’t you know only fools are satisfied?

This is a very perplexing part. If only fools are satisfied, then whether you slow down (as Joel suggests) or speed up (as the subject of his song does), it wouldn’t make a difference because neither would be satisfying. Is it a criticism of people in hot pursuit of what they want, because they’ll never be satisfied? Or is it a criticism of people who are inert because they’re satisfied, saying they should have more goals?
I don´t have the answers, but trying to figure them out is part of the fun!
You all should have a look for any pictures of Vienna. I have already done it. And now I really want to go!!!!

Here it is the lyrics and the address, if you want to watch parts of the movie "13 going on 30", it's the film soundtrack.

Slow down, you crazy child
you're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart, tell me
Why are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do and
Only so many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told..
That you can get what you want or you get old
You're gonna kick off before you even
Get halfway through
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

Slow down, you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight Tonight,...

Too bad but it's the life you lead
you're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong, you know
You can't always see when you're right. you're right

You've got your passion, you've got your pride
but don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

Slow down, you crazy child
and take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile

it's all right, you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize,..Vienna waits for you?
And you know that when the truth is told
that you can get what you want or you can just get old

You're gonna kick off before you even get half way through
Why don't you realize,. Vienna waits for you
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

I liked so much this song, mainly the part that the author says:

"Slow down, you crazy child
and take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile"

Because sometimes I fell like this. The life is so difficult, I have a lot of things to do and I need to produce results! Sometimes I need to disapper, or I would like to disapper. When this happen, I see that the life is funny, the life is more than "produce results"

I didn't know that this music is the soundtrack of "13 going on 30". It's an interesting movie: the character suddenly finds herself with 30 years old and among other things realize that she won't have back all that time she lost, the child plays, her friends, her childhood... Another movie with this same subject is "Click", with Adam Sandler.

Does it worth to live only to build our professional career, gather money, and let all the other things in second plan? Because in the end, the money and the possessions don't matter, but the life you lived and how you lived it does...

I think who sometimes everybody want came back be a child. Do the same things who we did when we were a child, a teenager. Because we were ourselves. Sometimes we want be ourselves, but can´t. Then, we close the eyers and remember of the past. It´s incredible, all people should do this: "Came back to the past and live the moment with te past time".
I love this movie. It´s emotion.

Vienna is a place to go,a kind of paradise. When you leave back the things that worried you.

This song is so beautiful and talk about to be free.

I agree with that sentence .. because I do not think we know what we really want, or that we are fully satisfied or happy.
Since a dream is consed just another dream appears because this is what we do to survive, we try to find things or people leave us happy.

This song describes the style of life
of people today. we are too hasted to achieve our
sights that we forget of stop to take a breath and
try figure out what we are doing. Is it the best way to
reach my goal?
In this strip "But then if you are so smart, tell me
Why are you still so afraid?". Some times we know how to
do the things, but we have fear of try, instead of take
on we dicide to hide ourself.
"Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true", it is
other nice phrase because we have to be optimist, but we
must dream something that we can conquer with feet on the
floor.

Cool song, nice rhythm and letter!

I think everyone have a "crazy child" inside their own minds.
Everyone "want" to make more, make better, better than before, moved by the society rules. This rules mould our lives and force us to make things that we don't want to do.

Everyone want to rest, but never had time... Forgetting about our own lives we are arrested, but the jail's key is in our minds, for take it we need just think about ourselves for a moment.
Make it and you will become better.

Everyone can visit Vienna!

This is about self-illusion. The writer tried to describe the
moment and the feeling that he was living. That moment
was something bad that he made and generated regrets.
To becoming better he started to create illusions to
cover his sins and find happiness it seems a kind of lie.

I liked this song because my life has somethings which can linked with the song "Vienna". Sometimes I try my life like a factory which is construct by results, products and other material things. But, I've my "Vienas" where I find security, friendship and good feelings.

I think that the song criticism the person who spends his life working to get something and loses his youth, his life.

Diverging a bit from the subject, Centro de Língua's next year calendar is already available at http://www.letras.ufg.br/cl

I'll have to register myself in the class of Tuesdays and Thursdays, as in this year, because it's the only Level 7 class that starts after 7 PM and matches with a Level 1. My wife is wanting to start her English course next year, so we have to choose classes in the same time :-)

What about you? In what class will you register yourselves?

It was a pleasure for me to meet you all and I hope we meet again next year.

Marcos Alves

P.S: As you might have noticed, I'm assuming that I'm already in Level 7. I hope it becomes true. Let's see tomorrow :-)

Juliana disse...

I would stop the english course because I thought that I wouldn't pass for level 7 and because I finished my graduate.
But now I think that I will continue the course and in this same hourly.

Thanks theacher Maressa for all help!:-)

Happy holidays for everybody!!!
